The origins of Poker are not completely known. However, there are a number of clues available to help us to make an educated guess. In the early, 19th Century in the United States there was a game that was similar in methodology to Poker. This game consisted of five cards being taken from a 21 card pack and the basis for this game is generally acknowledged to be taken from the Persian game As Nas.

There are a number of other possibilities as to the origins of Poker and its name. Poker may have derived from the Irish word Poca meaning Pocket but more likely it is considered to have come from the German word Pochen which roughly translates to meaning ‘to brag as a bluff’. Considering the well-known modern phrase poker face, meaning to conceal your feelings as you need to do during poker so nobody knows if you have a valuable hand or not, it is not an impossibility.

During the late 19th Century and early 20th Century a number of developments and variations were made to the game that is now known as Poker. Most of these developments have occurred in the United States. This includes the introduction of the Wildcard in around 1875 to other developments dating to 1925 and beyond. Such advances are credited with making Poker into the basis upon which commercial gambling has be built.

In the 1970’s, Poker made a revival with the introduction of Poker tournaments, increased popularity in Sbobet casino Betmaya. The World Series of Poker was introduced in 1970 which contributed to the making of superstar Poker players such as Johnny Moss and Bobby Baldwin. Later on it the 1970’s, off the back of this revival, a number of seminal Poker game play and strategy books were published.

By the 1980’s Poker had become more mainstream and was well-known as a pastime for all. Towards the end of the century Poker reached an all-time high being featured on popular television shows. In 1998, the first online Poker game website was launched called Planet Poker. Poker in its own right burst onto British televisions screens in 1999 in the form of Late Night Poker programmes. These programmes and other similar betting or gambling ones still dominate the television schedules of many television stations in the early hours of the morning.

Whilst we may not be able to fully trace the origins of Poker there is little doubt that it is more popular today than it has ever been in the past. There is little sign that this will change any time soon with Poker being highly promoting on gambling websites. It is amazing how far Poker has come from its humble origins, wherever they may be.
